Mariachi Mestizo From Delano, Ca.<\/h3>\n

If you live in California you drive a lot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I drive a lot.<\/div>\n
On a noticeably warm Sunday afternoon this past fall I pointed the car\u00a0inland towards Visalia, driving up 101 past Templeton, over the hill\u00a0at Paso Robles\u00a0and then right at Fresno down to Visalia.<\/div>\n
Woodlake actually.<\/div>\n
You probably haven\u2019t heard of it.<\/div>\n
I hadn\u2019t.<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Along with being an enormous agriculture area, the central valley is\u00a0also a labyrinth of prisons, food processing plants, industrial\u00a0incinerators, hazardous waste dumps and Superfund Sites. It seems\u00a0whatever Californians don\u2019t want in their communities they put it\u00a0somewhere between Highways 5 and 99 where they think nobody will see\u00a0it.<\/span><\/div>\n
And they\u2019re right but along with all this hell I would discover a remarkable amount of talent and beauty tucked away in one of these small valley towns.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Driving across to the far side of the valley, after miles and miles of\u00a0almond groves, I came upon this two block town with a lone gas station\u00a0and hamburger stand, Woodlake.\u00a0 This is where I\u00a0first heard Mariachi\u00a0Mestizo. They\u00a0were
\nperforming as part of The Woodlake\u00a0Mariachi Festival at a park just across\u00a0the way from the hamburger stand.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mariachi Mestizo is made up of:<\/span><\/div>\n
9 girls, 7 boys<\/span><\/div>\n
16 pieces all together<\/span><\/div>\n
9 violins, 4 trumpets, 2 guitars, harp and guitarron.<\/span><\/div>\n
ages 9 to 18<\/span><\/div>\n
and everybody sings a song.<\/span><\/div>\n
Everybody.<\/span><\/div>\n
That\u2019s impressive.<\/span><\/div>\n
There was something that struck me about them being from Delano but I\u00a0couldn\u2019t figure out what it was.<\/span><\/div>\n
As I listened to them that afternoon my mind\u00a0drifted back to when I\u00a0was teenager in Oakland. I had played organ in a ranchera style\u00a0conjunto. Dances and Quinceaneras. Weddings. All kinds of functions.\u00a0One gig that stood out was when we played in a lettuce field in\u00a0Salinas for the United Farm Workers. A plywood dance floor had been\u00a0constructed and a sheet of plastic tacked overhead to shield the sun. Cesar Chavez was there and at one point I shook his\u00a0hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Listening to Mestizo it\u00a0finally occurred\u00a0to me, Delano is where he started the grape boycott\u00a0back in the 1960\u2019s.That’s right, Delano is a\u00a0landmark town in the history of farmworker\u2019s rights\u00a0and dignity.<\/span><\/div>\n
Mestizo is not just an all male or all female mariachi but a mixed gender group where the girls are in the majority. And the girls are playing\u00a0instruments that have been traditionally males only.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Trumpet, guitar, harp and guitarron. All being played by the ladies\u00a0plus\u2026. a lot of them double. Or some even triple.<\/span><\/div>\n

Violin and Trumpet?<\/span><\/div>\n

Sure.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Guitarron?<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
That too. No problem.<\/span><\/div>\n
All the music is written out.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
OMG their sight reading is bulletproof.<\/span><\/div>\n
\n

One girl, Anai, had just won the\u00a0Kern County Music Scholarship Award for piano.<\/span><\/span>(this year it was won by her\u00a0sister Xochitl\u00a0)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Piano?<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n

I didn\u2019t even know they played\u00a0piano let alone won awards.<\/span><\/p>\n

Damn.<\/p>\n

They\u00a0didn’t even mention it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Turns out they both play all the\u00a0the instruments of the mariachi and<\/u> piano.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now any of these stories in of themselves\u00a0are probably not that\u00a0uncommon. I wouldn’t doubt\u00a0there\u00a0are similar stories with\u00a0youth mariachis in\u00a0California.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Texas too.<\/span><\/div>\n

But all these bits put together add up to an amazing story that flies\u00a0completely under the radar of public awareness. Even within their own\u00a0community.\u00a0And these kids can really sing and play.<\/span><\/div>\n
Juan and Leti Morales are the directors of Mariachi Mestizo.\u00a0Their intention isn\u2019t to train kids to become professional musicians\u00a0but rather to enable them to be employed by a mariachi when they go to college. I was told there’s\u00a0\u00a0a growing number of colleges\u00a0that have mariachis affiliated\u00a0with them.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
The students can make more money playing a Quinceanera or wedding on\u00a0Saturday\u00a0than working all week\u00a0at\u00a0Starbucks. It\u00a0gives the students more time to study. Kids from this program\u00a0have gone on to UCLA and Cal and done just that.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
After the Woodlake festival,\u00a0I started driving\u00a0over to Delano and to watch\u00a0them\u00a0rehearse.Sometime\u00a0around\u00a0Thanksgiving I brought along my friend, Bear Erickson, and we\u00a0recorded them in the Maestro\u2019s living room with just a laptop and a\u00a0few mics.<\/span><\/div>\n
There were limitations in doing this recording but it served the kids well in getting used to recording. A way of curing any\u00a0\u201cred light fever\u201d \u00a0they may experience\u00a0later.<\/span><\/div>\n
The idea of recording Mestizo at Capitol in Hollywood struck me one\u00a0night while making the long drive\u00a0back from
\nSan Francisco.\u00a0Listening to \u00a0\u201cFrank\u00a0Sinatra The Capitol Years\u201d on the radio had done\u00a0it. The singing\u00a0and arrangements\u00a0were great but it was the sound. All that brass\u00a0and\u00a0reeds. \u00a0And the strings!<\/span><\/span>The recorded sound of the strings was cinematographic.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Studio A (Frank\u2019s room as it’s called) at Capitol is\u00a0the most iconic recording studio in America.\u00a0\u00a0It would\u00a0be\u00a0an experience these kids\u00a0would hold forever.<\/span><\/div>\n
On January 24th, 2016 Mariachi Mestizo had their parents drive them 2\u00a01\/2 hours down to LA to Capitol and recorded in Studio A while their\u00a0parents sat and listened.<\/span><\/div>\n

It was amazing day. 12 songs, 41 takes in all, recorded with no edits\u00a0or overdubs in a little over 4 hours. There were times when we were\u00a0all moved to tears in witnessing this display of musicianship and\u00a0emotion.\u00a0 Even the yo cat LA\u00a0 sound engineers lost their minds at\u00a0witnessing such effortless focus.<\/span><\/div>\n
