\/>\n<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nic Clark had a fairly unconventional childhood, which is perhaps one reason why his first album, Love Your Life \/ Songs for the Whole Family, came out youth-centric.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>It wasn\u2019t that he wasn\u2019t supported\u2014 in fact, his mom got him the certificate that allowed him to play in bars at the tender age of twelve.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>It was the school thing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>His school system in the Denver area had a truancy court, and he set up semi-permanent residency there around the 7<span class=\"s1\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span> grade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You see, he had found the blues.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Visiting a bookstore with his brother, he found a book about harmonica playing which included pictures of Sonny Boy Williamson and Stevie Wonder and a harmonica\u2026.and he never came down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>The harp was his school, and he never missed a class there.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Soon he was playing live and then, after the shattering loss of both a young cousin and his grandfather, he found the healing power of music, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The harp led to the blues, and he identified his biggest influences as Mavis and the rest of the Staples Family, Taj Mahal, Curtis Mayfield, and the Staples\u2019 \u201cRespect Yourself\u201d\u2014\u201cSuch simple and direct lyrics,\u201d he says, \u201cBut so many layers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">His harp connected him to other blues men, including Billy Branch (who played with Willie Dixon), Lazy Lester, and Muddy Waters\u2019 son Big Bill Morganfield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Eventually, he fell in with Rick Estrin and the Nightcats.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>One night in the van\u2014Nic was 14\u2014he got to talking about Charles Bukowski with guitarist Kid Andersen, who said, just a bit incredulously, \u201cYou read Bukowski?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>\u201cYeah.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>\u201cHell, yeah,\u201d said Estrin.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Some people are just born that way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">In 2019, Nic came out to San Jose to see one of his heroes, Jonathan Richman, perform at the Henry Miller (another hero) Library in Big Sur.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Kid Andersen, the Head Mojo of Greaseland Studios when not a Nightcat, suggested Nic stick around and be his studio assistant.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>In the first few weeks he got to help on a Charlie Musselwhite and Elvin Bishop session, and then one with Little Village Foundation\u2019s (LVF) Sons of the Soul Revivers, which lead to Nic meeting Jim Pugh of LVF.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>A few jams later, Kid mentioned to Jim that Nic would love to make a record.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>It snowballed from there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI\u2019m a bit goofy, not a tough guy,\u201d said Nic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>\u201cFunky family music suits me better.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>He\u2019s also the uncle of a niece, Leah, who\u2019s 11, and a nephew, Asher, 6.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>There are enough painful memories in his own slightly strange childhood that he explains why he\u2019s fairly sentimental about children, about their innocence, and that\u2019s why he wants to make music for the whole family, including the children.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>But real music, he says, \u201cNot pandering, not just to distract them, but to share something with them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>After all, the little ones deserve the best from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<h1 data-fontsize=\"34\" data-lineheight=\"47.6px\" class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"--fontSize:34; line-height: 1.4;\">Nic&#8217;s Work<\/h1>\n<h3 data-fontsize=\"23\" data-lineheight=\"34.5px\" class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"--fontSize:23; line-height: 1.5; --minFontSize:23;\">Love Your Life \/ Songs for the Whole Family<br \/>\n<strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Not Your Average Children\u2019s Music<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\">And so he began work on Love Your Life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>One track, \u201cI Love Music,\u201d was recorded with his Colorado band, but the rest allowed him to play with heroes, the heavy hitters that hang out at Greaseland.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Kid on guitars of course, but also D\u2019Mar\u2014Derrick Martin, long time drummer for Little Richard.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Atlantic Records session man Jerry Jemmott (Nina Simone, B.B. King) came in for a track on bass.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>The Tonight Show\u2019s Vicki Randall added percussion on several songs. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>The Sons of the Soul Revivers backed up \u201cI\u2019m Your Friend.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>And Charlie Hunter, who stimulated \u201cthe most rewarding panic attack ever,\u201d helped out on \u201cDance Party!\u201d and \u201cThis Little Light of Mine,\u201c playing everything except vocals and harp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI wrote a few songs for my niece and nephew, and a couple for parents and grandparents.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>It was a passion project, and it\u2019s for my family.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Jim gave me total creative control, and I got to play the studio as well as instruments, so there\u2019s fingerpicking guitar, Calypso steel pan percussion, and synthesizer weirdness at one point\u2026we left no rock unturned.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>It really turned out to be an insane level of fulfillment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>And I love my niece Leah\u2019s album art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cSomehow, most children\u2019s music shows come across as upper class\u2026.I wanted to make music with some grit in it, for Walmart
