Like the subject of \u201cBag Woman,\u201d a song she wrote and recorded in 2014, Aireene Espiritu has no house or apartment of her own. She does have a car \u2014 a 2005 Prius \u2014 that she uses to travel from gig to gig along a route that includes Northern and Southern California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Utah. Sometimes she camps out or stays in motels, but more often Espiritu house-sits for friends or spends nights in the homes of people who book her for house concerts at which she accompanies herself on ukulele or guitar while singing in strong, emotion-soaked alto tones.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a Marriott credit card, so I get two free nights a year,\u201d the 46-year-old Philippines-born singer-songwriter says over lunch at a Greek restaurant in Oakland near the home of a friend at which she\u2019s staying. \u201cIt\u2019s like an indulgence for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
The house concert business has been picking up a lot lately, thanks, she says, to a website called www.concertsinyourhome.com. Club dates and festival bookings have also been on the rise, in which she shares the bill with two bands: the Itch, a quintet based in Southern California, and the Little Village Allstars, led by Jim Pugh, onetime Robert Cray and Etta James keyboardist, and guitarist Kid Andersen of Rick Estrin and the Nightcats.<\/p>\n
Espiritu is scheduled to perform at this year\u2019s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival on Oct. 2 after a string of solo shows and concerts with both bands in the Bay Area throughout September. She starts with a show Saturday, Sept. 3, where she\u2019ll appear solo at a benefit for the Multiple Sclerosis Society at the Lost Church in San Francisco.<\/p>\n
Espiritu follows that up with an outdoor set with the Itch on Sept. 9 at the Point Richmond Summer Music Festival. The Little Village Allstars will back Espiritu at the Poor House Bistro in San Jose on Sept. 18 as part of a daylong multi-artist blues event called the Lil Easy Backyard Party. She concludes her monthlong run Sept. 29 at San Francisco\u2019s Asian Art Museum.<\/p>\n
The latter two shows will feature songs from Espiritu\u2019s fifth and latest album, \u201cBack Where I Belong,\u201d which has received favorable notice from critics since its July release on Pugh\u2019s nonprofit Little Village Foundation label.<\/p>\n
Espiritu\u2019s latest effort is largely a stylistic departure for the singer, who spent her first 10 years in the Philippines before moving with her family to New Jersey, then living in Milipitas with an aunt while attending high school. It does include the spiritual \u201cDown by the Riverside,\u201d three Filipino songs on which two uncles join her vocally and on guitars, and a haunting prison song titled \u201cNo More, Oh Lord.\u201d
\nThe latter tune, as sung by Mississippi State Penitentiary inmate Henry Wallace, was first recorded at the prison in 1948 by self-described \u201csong hunter\u201d Alan Lomax. Espiritu\u2019s passion for American folk music was sparked by the Lomax book \u201cThe Land Where the Blues Began,\u201d which she literally stumbled upon on the floor of a bookstore in the early 1990s while living in San Francisco\u2019s Outer Sunset District and attending San Francisco State University.<\/p>\n
But much of Espiritu\u2019s \u201cBack Where I Belong\u201d is an homage to the Bay Area\u2019s own Sugar Pie DeSanto. Seven of the album\u2019s tracks were first recorded by DeSanto, the veteran Fillmore district-reared R&B singer-songwriter, now 80 years old and living in Oakland. It was Pugh\u2019s idea to have Espiritu interpret DeSanto, the daughter of a Filipino father and African American mother. Although Espiritu had never sung much R&B previously, she jumped at the challenge.<\/p>\n
Espiritu first saw DeSanto perform nine years ago when both appeared at the Rogue Valley Blues Festival in Ashland, Ore.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought, \u2018Wow. This small woman is on fire.\u2019 She was such a spunky woman,\u201d recalls Espiritu, who at 5 feet is only an inch taller than DeSanto.<\/p>\n
The two women didn\u2019t meet in person until June, however. Espiritu was one of four Little Village Foundation artists performing a show at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley that DeSanto attended.
\n\u201cI was afraid,\u201d admits Espiritu, who credits Etta James, DeSanto\u2019s onetime friend and Fillmore district neighbor, as one of her favorites. \u201cIf you\u2019re doing a tribute to someone, you would have to hope that they would like what you\u2019re doing. I had no idea how she would receive it. I was kind of preparing myself for the worst, but she was so nice and gracious.
